An increasing number of people are opting for part-time employment. According to the Office for National Statistics, the proportion has doubled in the last five years and it’s not solely people who have caring responsibilities that are anxious for a reduced hours role. More and more senior level workers are taking the decision to cut their hours and enjoy more leisure time.
It’s a positive thing; part-time working allows more people back into the workplace and also frees up roles for other people. Fortunately, it’s a trend that many employers have noticed and acted upon; introducing flexible working options in order so that they don’t miss out on talented individuals purely because of inconvenient working hours.
What’s more, employers are all now obliged to consider flexible working requests made by any member of staff who has clocked up 26 weeks’ service. While these requests don’t have to be granted, providing there’s a good business reason for the denial, the right to request flexible working could in theory transform many full-time roles into part-time equivalents.
